Sign from yesteryears. In 1974 two skiers tried to ski the Kek in one day. Unfortunately, they ran into March blizzard and one of them died of hypothermia and exhaustion. A district ranger at Ely did not want anyone to sue the US Forest Service and ordered the trail to be marked with blue diamonds. They were not really needed back then (because of the canopy and little brush present) but the trail (and hikers!) sure could use them at many places on east half of the trail now.
