This is a story of the "Plain of Jars" trip. We arrived on the preceding night and after "suiting up" began snowshoeing upstream on the Cascade River about 8 pm. Within less than a half a mile I broke through river ice. Undaunted, with a motto "Mission First, we continued till about 11 pm through numerous ponds connected by the river. Next morning, we broke camp and continued to plow through thick brush lining the stream banks taking frequent breaks.
Looking back to stream we came from. Ken broke through ice and tip of his snowshoe hooked under a burried branch. It took several minutes of frustrating effort to extricate his foot from the trap. Once on the lake, everything is peaceful.
"Map!" We frequently consulted the McKenzie map provided to the crewmembers for this trip. All crew members participated in route finding.
A solitary snowshoer.
This is Rod on his first snowcamping trip. Rod came well prepared and and well trained from the Banning State Park training hike.
Alien turds? A mysterious matter in middle of the lake looked like grass mixed with mud. A beaver building material transfer station? We assume so.
Last year a crew member broke through ice. We are taking no chances and jump accress stream bed.
We take breaks frequently, eat and drink. We would consume 4 to 5 quarts of water each day.
Rod apparently loves snowshoeing through brush. It was that sense of doing something unordinary, sense of leaving the path well travelled and taking exploration pursued by very few.
