BWAC > In the beginning of every trip enthusiasm runs high. Temps were at twenties. This will be a great gtrip.
BWAC > After easy snowshoeing on Lakes One to Four came the Kawishiwi River. This year the water ran higher and there was open water both below and above the portages. That made it very difficult to reach the portage itself. We had to bushwhack through forest, often over treefalls, small cliffs or uncomfortably close to open water - dicey.
BWAC > It is 19 degrees F below zero. My finger tips are in excruciating pain. That would be from the tiny capilaries freezing up. After several days of camping my gloves no longer insulate as well despite of sleeping with them on my stomach. The 20 below bag, without air drying and from being stuffed up has lost its warmth rating. Optimus 111B pressure relief valve has malfunctioned and I need to pump the tank every 30 seconds. Everything is very tedious and requires concentration and remembering to warm up my freezing hands. Sun feels good, but too bad we picked to north facing camp. Are we having fun yet?
BWAC > It is six o'clock in the evening and we made only five miles today. We still need to go another half an hour to reach our destination for tonight. Scenes like this make this trip worthwhile. Now I wish I brought a tripod.
BWAC > We are back to Stalingrad morning. Very cold. With stove problems and having to thaw out frozen mukluks it is taking us four hours to break a camp instead of two and a half. We have plenty of food, and I just wish they issued a pair of nice dry warm gloves every morning.
BWAC > On the last day and a half we travel through "Ham Lake Fire". Sureal scenery. Extreme color stratification. White snow, charcoal blackened tree trunks and blue sky. Many tree branches are split open at the ends and look like thorns from a Disney movie. In its very own way, the scnery is very beautiful. We follow moose tracks - they pick the easiest way.
BWAC > Day 7. We will make it out today. The fire burned everything on the high ridges. At low spots, some trees were saved. We worship the sun, fresh air and vast space. This has been remarkable seven days. Very intense, and Beth says, "living in the moment". I broke through ice twice but my new knee high gaiters saved me.
BWAC > Seven days after departing Lake One, we snowshoe to Tuscarora Lodge at Gunlint. I hitchhiked to our car that we left with friends. Two hours later we enjoyed all you can eat walleye at Blue Water Cafe in Grand Marais. Deja Vu? It seemed to me that just a week ago, also on Friday night, I had dinner, all you can eat walleye at Blue Water. I guess that's right, we were dropping off my car a week ago... Now 400 photos later it is a trip to remember. Thanks to Paul, our shuttle driver, who could not go because his knee acted up, to Scott for help with gear, and to Adventurous Christians Camp where I learned to appreciate the wilderness as a guide thirty three years ago.
