Backpacking Snowbank Trail 2007 : Beth and I backpacked the BWCA Snowbank Trail over Thanksgiving 2007 weekend. After a hearty breakfast at Smitty's on Snowbank we departed going clockwise. Views from the north side of Snowbank are truly spectacular. It was especially fascinating to watch the open lake just as its bays were freezing up. We enjoyed the two and half day hike. Our comments: Trail might turn into trial on the northside with anything more than dusting of snow. We had one inch of snow and were thankful for numerous wolf tracks to point us in the right direction. Crossing the outlet river out of Snowbank was dicey at best and I fell into the river up to my thigh at 24 deg F. Luckily it did not end up to be the experience of my lifetime and we continued on after having hot soup with frozen hard boiled eggs. Ample of opportunities for trail clearing but other wise navigable.
